We sent out a distress signal by hijacking the shutdown fm radio network in Norway.

The distress signal was a recorded message from Teodoras sister. Urging people to help free Teodora by sharing the signal.

The signal quickly spread all over the world and sparked a debate regarding the strict abortion law in El Salvador.

In El Salvador any form of abortion is prohibited. In 2017 we sent out a distress signal on behalf of Teodora Vasquez, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison after suffering a stillbirth.

How? By hijacking the shutdown FM-network in Norway.

It wasn’t just the first distress signal to be broadcasted on the Norwegian FM-network since second world war. By picking our FM-signal up in a LIVE feed, we turned radio into a social media campaign and asked people to help spread our signal, by turning their Facebook or Twitter into a radio antenna.

The distress signal spread to over 90 countries and was picked up by international media. In only 4 days the distress signal had reached El Salvador, showing the decisionmakers that people were listening in from all over the world.

On February 15th 2018 Teodora was set free.

Made together with our NoA sister Making Waves.
